Stuck for something to say on twitter?

Filed under: General News — admin @ 10:18 am

Some handy ideas about what to Tweet

  1. Instead of answering the question, “What are you doing?”, answer the question, “What has your attention?”
  2. Have more than one twitterer at the company. People can quit. People take holidays. It’s nice to have a variety.
  3. When promoting a blog post, ask a question or explain what’s coming next, instead of just dumping a link.
  4. Ask questions. Twitter is GREAT for getting opinions.
  5. Follow interesting people. If you find someone who tweets interesting things, see who she follows, and follow her.
  6. Tweet about other people’s stuff. Again, doesn’t directly impact your business, but makes us feel like you’re not “that guy.”
  7. When you DO talk about your stuff, make it useful. Give advice, blog posts, pictures, etc.
  8. Share the human side of your company. If you’re bothering to tweet, it means you believe social media has value for human connections. Point us to pictures and other human things.
  9. Don’t toot your own horn too much.
  10. Or, if you do, try to balance it out by promoting the heck out of others, too.

Google vs Apple mobile ads: it is on

Filed under: General News — admin @ 4:24 pm

There is no disputing the fact that Google reigns supreme when it comes to online advertising – in January 2009 it had 76pc of the US search advertising market – but the announcement of the Apple OS 4.0 software update has brought with it a brand new mobile ad platform to challenge the status quo.

While Google Mobile Ads http://www.google.com/mobileads/ allows developers to monetise their apps through in-app ads comprising of text or an image, what happens when a user clicks on this ad is that they are brought out of their application and to the advertisers’ website. Not ideal.

iAd will be a game changer

Apple’s new iAd platform is probably going to be a game changer. Leaving aside Apple’s exuberant claims that it “combines the emotion of TV ads with the interactivity of web ads” what is really happening here is that in-app advertising will no longer be distracting, intrusive and most importantly will not take the user out of their current application if they click on it.

The problem with in-app mobile ads right now, as Apple sums it up, is that “users must then navigate back to their app, and it is often difficult or impossible to return to exactly where they left.”

What iAd does is displays full-screen video and interactive ad content without ever leaving the app, letting users return to their app anytime they choose.

It also makes it easier for developers to drop ads into their applications with 60pc of ad revenue going into their pockets.

‘Search is not where it’s at’

While Google’s advertising empire is built on search Apple CEO Steve Jobs has declared that when it comes to the mobile device “search is not where it’s at”.

“People are not searching on a mobile device like they are on the desktop,” he told reports at yesterday’s Apple event.

As reported in the New York Times Google spokesperson Carolyn Penner stated that Google Mobile Ads were doing well, growing to five times bigger than it was two years ago due to smartphones users searching the web between 30 and 50 times more often than regular handset users.

This may be the case but with well over 10,000 apps available on the App Store and three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months as of January 2010 the market size for iAd is potentially huge so the smartphone money is on Apple.

Will Google Fast Flip save the newspaper industry?

Filed under: General News — admin @ 5:22 pm

The latest project to come out of Google Labs may be an unlikely breath of life for the ailing publishing industry: Fast Flip is Google’s way of flipping through news sites with some of the ease and feel of the physical newspaper or magazine.

Rather than waiting for content-rich sites to load when all you want to do is “skim through the papers,” Google Labs’ Fast Flip provides a preview of the article in question with an option to click through instead of fully load.

“The flow should feel seamless and let you rapidly flip forward to the content you like, without the constant wait for things to load. Imagine taking 10 seconds to turn the page of a print magazine,” said Krishna Bharat, distinguished researcher, Google News.

Content partners add clout

In order to give Fast Flip some clout, Google partnered with three dozen top publishers, including the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, Salon, Fast Company, ProPublica and Newsweek.

You can choose from several categories: popular, recent, most viewed, recommended and headlines. There are also the normal sections: politics, business, sci-tech and so on, as well as categories by topics and sources.

More than a print copycat

This isn’t just about emulating the magazine or newspaper experience; it is also about adding the community aspect of an online platform: “Fast Flip also personalises the experience for you, by taking cues from selections you make to show you more content from sources, topics and journalists that you seem to like.

“In short, you get fast browsing, natural magazine-style navigation, recommendations from friends and other members of the community and a selection of content that is serendipitous and personalised,” explained Bharat.

Media partners will share revenue earned through this Google venture from contextually relevant ads.

“The publishing industry faces many challenges today, and there is no magic bullet. However, we believe that encouraging readers to read more news is a necessary part of the solution. We think Fast Flip could be one way to help, and we’re looking to find other ways to help, as well, in the near future,” said Bharat.

There is also a mobile version for both iPhones and Android devices, which has tactile page turning for a more interactive experience.

Irish Times takes a stake in consumer website

The Irish Times Group is to partner with price comparison website uchoose.ie and the paper’s subsidiary DigitalworX Ltd is to take a 10pc stake in the company for an undisclosed sum.

DigitalworX is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Irish Times Group and owns and manages Ireland.com, myhome.ie and irishracing.com.

Uchoose.ie (pictured) will now power price-comparison services across the Irish Times Group network of sites.

“Given the current economic climate, price differentiation is hugely relevant,” said Patrick Lee, director and co-founder of uchoose.ie,

“Our goal is to open up Ireland as a truly transparent marketplace for the consumer,” Lee added.

Set up in 2007, uchoose.ie compares features and prices on a range of everyday utilities and services, including digital TV, broadband, home and travel insurance, credit cards, personal loans, flights and hotels.

The site’s comparison searches allow consumers to compare products and then order online. uchoose.ie checks providers’ websites in real-time, presenting information based on specific user requirements.

The site provides the consumer with the flexibility to compare and choose in a variety of ways, from an increasingly diverse product range, based on reliable, trustworthy information.

“The demand for price comparison in Ireland has never been higher, and we are eager to become a part of this development,” explained Peter Callan, managing director of DigitalWorX.

“Our partnership with uchoose.ie will bring this easy and convenient way to save money to a larger audience, allowing consumers to make smarter and more cost-effective purchasing decisions,” Callan said.
