HP is getting into the mini-notebook fray. The new HP Mini 1000 lineup will compete with the mini-notebook offerings from Asus and Acer. Each member of the new HP Mini 1000 lineup has 1,024×600-pixel resolution, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios, and built-in Webcams. The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition will evoke the designer’s spring collection.

HP has just unveiled three mini-notebook PCs in a push to dramatically build upon the inaugural Mini 100 model it rolled out for education applications in April. The PC maker’s overriding goal is to match speeds with rivals in what is fast becoming a high-growth segment globally.

Both Asus and Acer experienced robust growth in the mini-notebook segment during the year’s third quarter, explained Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa. Though HP did maintain the No. 1 position in worldwide PC shipments in the latest quarter, the company’s sales were negatively impacted by HP’s slower entry into the mini-notebook market, Kitagawa said.

“Though most major vendors now have their own mini-notebook offerings, it will be a challenge for them to match or beat the market expansion that Asus and Acer have attained so far,” Kitagawa noted.

HP’s Netbook Triad

Less than one-inch thick and weighing about two pounds, each member of the new HP Mini 1000 lineup is equipped with a backlit LED display featuring 1,024×600-pixel resolution, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios, two USB ports, an Ethernet jack, and a built-in webcam with microphone. What’s more, all three models are powered by a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor from Intel.

Available for $399, the HP Mini 1000 ships with Windows XP Home preinstalled. Prospective buyers also can choose between 8.9-inch and 10.2-inch displays, as well as select between a solid-state drive offering with 2GB, 4GB or even 8GB of storage , or a hard disk drive.

Slated for release in January at $379, the HP Mini 1000 with MIE (for Mobile Internet Experience) will come fully loaded with instant messaging, e-mail, and Skype for online video chat. To minimize the startup time, all available social-media applications can be run from the machine’s Linux-driven MIE dashboard.

The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition, which is scheduled for a mid-December debut at $699, will evoke the famous fashion designer’s spring 2009 collection by reflecting a vibrant red design featuring a peony. In order to give users the full-blown notebook experience, HP’s most fashion-conscious machine will ship with Windows XP Home preinstalled.

Firefox aims for ‘many devices, one web’ experience

Up until recently, web browser developers have more or less seen the mobile handset as an afterthought as opposed to a serious platform, but when the iPhone came along with Safari, this was the impetus for change.

At the same time as Apple’s mobile version of Safari arrived on the scene, Mozilla was also looking seriously at bringing a rounded user experience to the mobile web browser, and at the time, back in October 2007, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s vice-president of engineering said that mobile devices had become a top priority for the organisation behind the popular open source browser, Firefox.

Roll the clocks forward a year later and Mozilla has indeed been working hard on its Firefox Mobile (codenamed Fennec), with an alpha version expected sometime this week, according to Christian Sejersen, mobile director of engineering on Mozilla Mobile.

If Safari has already brought a decent browsing experience to the touchscreen, widescreen iPhone, then what can Firefox bring to the average modern handset? Well, according to Sejersen, the way Mozilla looks at it is, there is no mobile web: “There’s only one web and we want to provide access to this one web where Firefox can render the exact same page on the mobile phone with the same rendering technology.”

The difference here is that, as Schroepfer has observed, the mobile has become a ‘tier one’ priority for Mozilla: “The mobile browser shares the same code as the latest version of Firefox for the desktop, so it will benefit from all the good things such as HTML 5 and added security.

“What we have said before is that Firefox Mobile will be afforded the same first-class citizen status as the desktop version, and not one version behind like most other web browser developers do,” explained Sejersen.

As for the platform for the forthcoming mobile browser, Sejersen said that Mozilla is initially targeting the N810 (pictured), which is Linux-based and has open access to APIs (application programming interfaces) and the OS (operating system), but also has a large touch screen as its development platform.

Further down the line, Firefox Mobile will be made available for both touch and non-touch versions of Windows Mobile. After that, Sejersen said that although Mozilla hasn’t made a commitment as of yet, the Symbian phone will most likely follow.

As regards Google’s Android, he said Mozilla is doing nothing right now or in the near future. As for the iPhone, it is a complete no for two reasons: firstly the fact that developers cannot create an application that replicates the functionality of a pre-existing Apple one, and secondly because Apple also does not allow apps that run any code in the background because of the way the licence terms are written.

With regard to extra functionality over the Mozilla Firefox Mobile browser, Sejersen said that if a company like Adobe provide the Flash plug-in from its end, then Firefox will provide the plug-in mechanism, but, he reckons, one of the most important aspects is the added security features.

“There is not a lot of focus around security on the mobile right now; people think about it on desktop and laptop a lot, but as far as I know, I haven’t seen a security update for the mobile platform yet, and we carry a lot of personal information around with us on our phones so there is a need for this.”

The beta version of Firefox Mobile will be released before the year is out and is expected to come out of beta testing some time in 2009.

Business broadband wars erupt as Imagine gives it away for free

Sean Bolger’s Imagine, which earlier this year acquired Irish Broadband for €47m, is to give SME businesses 3Mbps of broadband for free as part of a new array of services.

The new campaign will represent a €20m investment by the company, and is claimed to be a response to the economic challenges facing SMEs.

Imagine, which currently has some 15,000 SME broadband customers, wants to grow its marketshare from the current 9pc to 15pc within the next 12 months.

Businesses that accept the offer will get their broadband for free, and can get 25pc off the cost of their phone calls.

Imagine’s commercial director Ruairi Jennings (pictured) said that businesses will have the option of increasing their speeds to 12Mbps as their needs grow.

He said the new services could potentially save firms €100m over the next five years.

“With this package from Imagine, the average SME will save €1,200 annually, amounting to €6,000 over a five-year period.”
